Welcome to Artsy Play Wednesday on Capri + 3 where each week creative blogs add links to posts about arts, crafts and play activities for children. I will get things started with an activity I did with the babies this week, and then please join in and add your links.
Felt and Pumpkin Jack-o-lanterns
You will need:
Black Felt (enough to make one or more faces)
scissors
Pumpkin
Velcro, double sided tape, or foam double sided tape
printable designs if desired and pins to attach them to the felt
Cut out a face or faces from the black felt freehand or using designs you find online. Use the search terms “jack-o-lantern printable design template” or something similar on Google and many different designs will appear. I decided to make one face freehand as the babies are not an age where they would like to mix and match. Older children would enjoy mixing and matching the features and can help cut out the faces and pick the designs.
Attach the Velcro, tooth side up to the pumpkin and the felt should adhere temporarily for play without the need to attach the other side. If you are planning to leave the jack-o-lantern up for display instead of using it as a play activity, you can use both sides of the Velcro or simply glue the felt to the pumpkin. You could also attach the felt with two sided tape for play or display. I discovered that the tape on the Velcro became less sticky with time due to the fuzz on the felt as the babies played. The tape or Velcro would need to be replaced to play with it again. When the babies were done playing and attaching the features, I displayed the jack-o-lantern with Indian corn to add more of a fall flair. The nice thing is that this pumpkin can be displayed for a while and then carved later. You could even trace the felt design and use that to carve your jack-o-lantern.
The finished Jack-o-lantern on display
Ryder concentrated as he added the features
while Grayson took off the Velcro and didn’t know why the felt wouldn’t stick.
Capri used one of the eyes to make a pumpkin stem on her head
and Xayden gave the Jack-o-lantern a loving hug.
