This time of year calls out for hot apple cider and a cozy blanket. Apple cider and apple pie both make the house smell like home. I decided to combine the two by making hot apple cider in a cup with a pie crust edge. It is really easy to do and makes it more fun! This recipe was a big hit with our whole family.
SLOW COOKER APPLE CIDER WITH A CRISPY PIE CRUST EDGED MUG
You will need:
- 64 oz. Unfiltered apple cider
- 3-6 Cinnamon sticks
- 2 Teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 Orange
- 1/4 Cup packed light brown sugar
Set your slow cooker to 2 hours on high or 4 hours on low. Then shake the unfiltered juice, remove the lid and pour it in. Add the cinnamon sticks and vanilla. Slice the orange in half. Squeeze half of the orange into your cider mixture. Slice the other half of the orange into two slices and slice those two slices in half. Take the end piece and squeeze the juice into the mixture. Float the four half slices in the cider. Then add the light brown sugar to the apple cider mixture and stir. Cook for 2-4 hours depending on your temperature setting.
Pie Crust Mugs:
You will need:
- 1 package of refrigerated pie crust (contains two pie crust dough rounds)
- Butter flavored cooking spray or melted butter
- Paper towel or clean cloth
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Cut the pie crust into strips that fit around your mug with about 1/2 inch below the rim and 3/4 inch showing on the outside edge of the cup. You can place your mug rim side down to estimate the size needed. Then, spray some cooking spray (or melted butter) onto your paper towel and moisten the rim of each mug. Cover the edge of your mugs with a strip of pie dough to cover the edge. Use a fork to add a decorative edge. Place the mugs on a cookie sheet inside the oven for about twelve minutes, or until the edge is a light golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
When the cider is ready, use a ladle to pour cider into each pie crust edged cup. Enjoy!
