Each day I do ‘table time’ with the babies. They do puzzles, arts and crafts, and other learning activities. They were all in the midst of gluing with glue sticks and using leaf stamps when Capri announced that she needed to go potty. We have potties in several places for convenience and sanity. I took her to the closest one in the play room and she sat down. I went back to the boys about seven feet away and checked on their craft play. Capri announced “all done” and waddled over to the gate, pants still down. I was walking towards her when she lost her balance and fell into the door frame. She immediately began to cry and I noticed a bruise forming on her fair skin as soon as I picked her up. After finishing the potty routine, including an m&m, a sticker, dumping in the big potty and washing hands, I looked for a bag of frozen veggies to put on her injury.
I noticed a big bag of frozen grapes that Greg loves to snack on. I took some out and created an instant ice pack. This is going to be my new source of ice packs for all our bumps and bruises. It is better than a big bag of frozen veggies as it can be customized to just the right size. I had her lay her head on a pillow and I held the homemade ice pack to her forehead. I looked into her eyes with concern and she gazed back at me and said, “buh boom, buh boom, buh boom.” She then pointed to herself, crossed her arms across her chest, pointed at me, and said, “I love you.” I melted.
Each night we read the babies several nursery rhymes and sing songs. When we leave the room we tell each of them that we love each of them while crossing our arms to form an ‘X’ on our chests for love. Then we say, “you make our hearts go buh boom, buh boom, buh boom” while thumping a heartbeat with one hand on our chests. I tell them “I love you” and “buh boom…” at various times throughout the day too. They now use this as a way to say I love you to us too. Sometimes when I tuck Xayden in for nap, he will smile up at me, pat his chest and say, “buh boom, buh boom.” It is heartwarming to hear that. I am grateful to be able to spend time with the babies and develop a special connection.
