I was about to throw a foam tray into the recycling bin when I checked the back to see if it was recyclable. It wasn’t. So, I cut it into four pieces and gave one to each of the Sugar Snaps with one toothpick each. They had a great time scratching it, poking holes and imagining it to be a wide variety of things from a merry-go-round to a boat. It sparked excited conversations amongst the four of them about all of the exciting things their bits of foam had become.
It was nice to see them so excited and at the same time, I was amused by all the educational toys and at supplies I have purchased which are not met with nearly as much enthusiasm. They enjoy the black paper that has rainbow colors underneath when it is scratched with a toothpick, so I thought they would enjoy scratching the tray. I did not think the excitement would last, though given there are no rainbow colors underneath. It seemed that without the colors, their imaginations took over and they enjoyed it even more.

I love this! What a clever and simple idea. This is the type of play we do all of the time. Cardboard boxes, in general, are huge favorites at our house and often become hats, boats, cars, trains or, recently, get transformed into robots with paper and glue.
My boys almost always have toilet paper rolls and a few small plastic cups too, which they've turned into bowling pins, golf holes (in both cases they use small practice golf balls that are plastic that we happen to use). They also like to drive small cars and trains through the toilet paper rolls too and Benji likes to use them as bracelets. It's amazing to me how simple items can become so much more.
Thank you Jennifer.
Those are great ideas. I save all our TP rolls and I love the idea of them using them with their cars. We will definitely try that. They love it when we drive under overpasses or through tunnels and I imagine the TP rolls would add a lot of fun to their car adventures.
