Our kids are really into mandarin oranges lately so we always have a lot on hand. I decided to make up a game using ice cream cones and the mandarin orange ‘ice cream’ on top. They played several rounds and have asked to play again soon. This would be easy and relatively inexpensive to do for a classroom, scout troupe, birthday party or family gathering.
The Great Ice Cream Cone Race-Gross Motor Game
You will need:
- Sugar Cones (one for each child)
- Mandarin Oranges (one for each child)
Have the children balance the oranges on top of their cones. Then, line them up next to each other for the starting point of the race. Set a finish line for them to cross or stand there (as I did) and be the finish line. When you say ‘go’ have the children run towards the finish line holding the cone away from their bodies balancing the mandarin orange. If the orange drops, they need to return to the starting line and start again. The winner of the round crosses the finish line first with the orange still balanced on the cone. Play several rounds. It is great exercise and kids love it! More rounds also allows for more children to win. When you are done with all the rounds, you have a built in snack for the kids.
The race begins.
Several oranges drop and Capri is still running.
And we have a winner for this round.

Hi Tessa.
Ours would have eaten it first too at two. : 0 ). At 5 they were able to play several rounds before enjoying it as a snack.
