Kindergarteners love games. They typically know their colors already, so it is the perfect age to play a guessing game. I used to do variations of this game when I was a recreation director teaching acting to young children and I have participated in ‘who am I’ guessing games at baby showers and other events as ice breakers. It is an easy way to get people talking and interacting.
What Color Am I? Kindergarten Guessing Game
You will need:
- Sticky labels or paper and tape
- Colored stickers, markers or crayons
- Marker (or printer if you wish to do it on the computer)
Write the names of colors on labels and add something of that color to the label, such as a colored dot drawn with a marker (or sticker). You can do this one at a time with the child standing in front of the group or as a large group with children walking around and mingling. Place the color sticker on the child’s (or children’s) back. Have the child with the sticker figure out what color is on their back by asking the other children questions, such as “Are bananas this color” or “Am I the color of grass?” The question may not include color name unless a ‘yes’ answer is given. For example, if the answer to “Am I the same color as bananas?” is ‘Yes’ then the child may ask, “Am I yellow?” Once the answer is known, the child may place the sticker on the front of their shirt until all the children have had a chance to figure out their colors.

I love this idea! It's so easy to do yet so fun for the kiddos. I'm going to try this with my kids when my toddler starts learning his colors. Obviously my 1st grader knows her colors but she'll love playing this with her little brother and helping him along!
Tricia Goodmama says
Ohh! What a great idea!! I wish I saw this back when I was a kindergarten teacher. The kids would love it. I'll have to play it with my son. He may be a little young, but we can try. Thanks for sharing!

Kids love guessing games! This is such a fun way to learn their colors!
Theresa says
Hi Meredith.
I hope your toddler enjoys this when he is a little bit bigger. I imagine your 1st grader would love to be an assistant teacher (or you could give her harder colors to guess).

What a great twist on a classic game!
Natasha Johnson says
Love the twist you've added to a classic game. So you know we are playing this.
Amber says
This is a great activity! I think my crew (3 years) is too young to generate questions, but we could play it the other way around where I give them clues until they guess the color. It would be great to play in the car or while waiting for something.
Theresa says
Hi Amber.
That is a great idea to play in reverse! Let me know how it goes if you try it out.
