Our children enjoy creating patterns and have gotten pretty good at replicating patterns that they see. So, I decided to change it up a bit and see if they could replicate patterns by touch. They had a lot of fun with this game.
Math Patterning Game With a Blindfold:
You Will Need:
An assortment of objects to create patterns by touch. We used:
- Fruit
- Large Paperclips
- Pom poms
- Buttons
- Erasers
- blindfold
This is such an easy game to set up. You can use objects that you already have at home or school or pick up a few things from your local dollar store. I picked up the blindfold and other small items at our dollar store The blindfold was actually a sleep mask. These items can be kept to play the game again and again or re-purposed for crafts. After using the fruit, it can be enjoyed in a fruit salad that the kids can help to make.
Have the participating child wear the blindfold. Then, hand over the first item and encourage the child to identify it by touch. Once the answer is correct, move on to the next item and so on until all the items that will be used in your pattern have been identified. Then, let the child know that the pattern is starting. Have the child identify the items in the pattern and then guess what item you will be handing over next. This game can easy, such as apple, orange, apple, orange… or more challenging such as button, button, eraser, pom pom, paperclip, button, button, eraser…

This is so cute! When I was a kid I used to love playing a memory game with my mom that involved blindfolds. Such a great hands-on activity for kids!
Thank you The Jersey Momma.
That is cool that you used to play a blindfold memory game with your Mom. I hope ours will remember this game some day too.

Thank you Twitchetts.
I think it is interesting to try this twist. I noticed that my kids have different ways of learning and perceiving things by watching how they interpreted the sensory information.

Hi Kimberly.
I hope your oldest enjoys trying this out. I like that it can be varied to whatever level she is at and can be made progressively more challenging as she gets more comfortable with the game.
