Sitting down doing math problems is not all that exciting for most kids. Add a little exercise and it gets more interesting. Our kids loved this activity. It is so easy to set up and really gets them moving.
You will need:
- Sticky notes
- Pen (dark enough to read easily)
- A place to run
This game can be played using whatever type of math your children are working on. We used addition and subtraction but it could also be done using multiplication or division, as long as the answer can be calculated in the child’s head.
- Write one number per sticky note.
- Then, on several sticky notes write the symbol they are working on, such as + or -.
- We used a track at a local park. Use whatever distance that best fits the children participating. The shorter the distance, the more equations they will do. Then have them complete one lap which, for us was one time around the track.
- After they complete the first lap, give them one number each on a sticky note.
- On their next time around, give them a math symbol (such as + sign). They keep the first number and then continue to run with both sticky notes.
- When they come around the third time, give them another number. This forms the equation (such as 4 + 7).
- Instruct them to give you the answer when they return from their next lap.
- After they give you the answer, collect the sticky notes. Then, have them hold the answer (such as 11) in their mind and give them another symbol, such as the minus sign along with another number. They will be focusing on that equation, such as 11 – 6 while running this lap. Have them give the answer at the end of the lap and continue with another symbol and number. If holding the number in their head is too difficult, write their answer on a sticky note for them to carry along with the math symbol and second number.
It is fun for kids to work out the answers while they are exercising. While this is an individual game, it is fun to do as a group while they only compete with themselves.

What a great idea of making math for kids a fun & an exciting task. Never thought math can be made so much interesting f0r kids. Perfect way to teach kids about the basic math operation while they are playing which helps to improve their learning as well as physical activities.
