We have been working on potty training with all four of the Sugar Snaps, but so far, Capri is the one who has really taken off. She is at 95% success during the day not including naps. We have even started taking her on outings with her underwear and so far, so good. She had been using a small potty seat which is great for home, but she was scared of the ‘big potty’ whenever I encouraged her to try it. So we purchased a child size potty seat which fits onto the adult toilet. I made several attempts to have her sit on the big potty and was met with bursts of tears and terrified cries of “down!”
One day last week, she said she needed to go potty. I asked her if she wanted to use the big potty or the little potty, fully expecting her to say “little potty.” Much to my surprise, she said, “Big potty.” She proudly sat on the big potty and giggled at her own success. I was ecstatic too at her accomplishment and called Greg who was on his way home from work while she was still on the potty. As soon as he said “hello” I told him enthusiastically that his daughter was sitting on the big potty for the very first time. I then put the phone up to Capri’s ear and she announced, “big potty” into the phone. I was expecting to hear Greg’s enthusiasm as she told him the news, but he only said “hello” several times. I took the phone and asked him why he did not congratulate his daughter on using the big potty. A male voice said, “Hello? Who is this?.” I said, “I’m very sorry, wrong number” and hung up the phone, a little mortified that I had shared Capri’s big potty success with an unsuspecting stranger.
Do you have any potty training stories or embarrassing moments to share? I’d love to hear from you. As always, comments are welcome.
I'm very sorry, but I'm going to have to tell everyone in Redding!
Linda
Hi Linda.
Sure…feel free to tell everyone.

That's pretty much how it went for us. Elizabeth was the one always going and they all were a little scared to use the big potty, so we did the same as you. We got a Dora seat and an Elmo seat and they started using the big potty. Of course we you have for not everyone could wait for the big potty, so we had 2 small potty chairs for those who couldn't wait. We even had to carry one with us in the van, in case we needed to use it when we were out in public.
We switched over to a toilet seat this past summer that has a child seat built-in and that has worked out great. Those little fit in seats gets really dirty and smelly after awhile and that was with washing them every other day and alternating seats. Now we just have to wipe the seat, which the kids have learned to do by themselves.
Hi Stephanie.
Where did you find the toilet seat with a built in child seat? I have never heard of that. It sounds great! We also have a small potty seat in our van…It is a life saver for outings since Capri is now wearing underwear.
That is great that your kids are wiping the toilet seat themselves. We will need to teach ours to do that too. It is encouraging to read what works from someone who has been there!

Congrats on your potty training progress! That poor stranger…too funny. We haven't started potty training here yet. I keep hoping if I keep waiting one day the will just magically train themselves, lol. A girl can dream right?
Hi Christi.
I have a friend who has triplets and the waiting method worked for her…She waited and then they learned very easily. That sounds wonderful.

Oh my gosh, that is SO funny!!! What a great story! Congrats to Capri for getting the hang of this potty training thing. Also a great example of how kids do things on their own time. My oldest refused to poop in the potty for MONTHS after he was "pee trained." Then one morning he got up and did it all by himself, and that was that! Sort of like Capri and the big potty.
Hi Ellie.
We hope our boys will catch on soon. We have had little successes with them, but it is not yet consistent. But, as you said, they will do it in their own time.
